The original German lyrics of "Silent Night" were composed in 1816 by Joseph Mohr, which were set to music by Franz Gruber in 1818 in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. Forty years later, in 1859, John Young, a priest at Trinity Church, New York City, published the English translation that we sing today.
Our arrangement developed out of some experimentation with jazz chords. In the English-Hebrew-Arabic version we are joined by our friends Rasha & Rani Saba. Enjoy!
lyrics
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant, so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
[Hebrew translation:]
Night of mysteries, night of secrets
The shepherds in the fields
Saw an angel of the Lord
And heard the good news from his mouth
The Messiah is born
The Messiah is born
لــيلـة ذكـــرها
خــالد وعــظــيــم
إذ تجلت للورى
نعمة الرب الكريم
في محيا الهادي
مــفتــدي الآثــيـم
[Arabic translation:]
The memory of the night
Everlasting and great
When the grace of the noble Lord
Appeared to humankind
The redemption of sinners (is reflected)
In his gentle face
